The public institution "Cave Park Grabovača" has designed and installed an insect hotel on the "Fauna" educational trail leading to the cave Samograd, with the aim of increasing their population, raising awareness, and educating people about their importance and the need for conservation. Insects are becoming less common in nature due to the increasing use of pesticides.
The hotel attracts insects by providing them with a safe shelter from low winter temperatures. To start, a wooden structure was built and filled with various natural materials that insects can burrow into, such as twigs, pinecones, dry grass, bricks, and old wood. A wooden box for butterflies was also added.
In addition to its ecological purpose, the hotel serves an aesthetic and educational function. Since the construction work on the hotel is complete and autumn is approaching, the first residents of this little hotel are expected soon. An educational board has been placed nearby, offering instructions on how to build an insect hotel in your own garden. The hotel was built by the institution’s employees with the help of volunteers (part of the project Nature Protection 6, funded by the European Solidarity Corps program).
